Don’t Let Your Feelings Dictate Your Progress

Hello and good morning! Welcome back to the conversation. I hope everyone had a wonderful relaxing weekend. Now that I am working, I’ve made it a priority to find time to unwind, and I’m excited for everyone else to embrace those moments of refreshment too! Although I am grateful for the work, having balance is just as important to me. Now, let’s get something delightful to drink and dive into our conversation!

We’ve all been there. The alarm goes off, and every fiber of your being wants to hit snooze. You have a challenging task ahead, and a wave of anxiety or doubt washes over you. You know what you should do, but your feelings are screaming to do the exact opposite.

This is the central conflict in our pursuit of change: the battle between our rational intentions and our emotional impulses. And if you truly want to have the change you desire in your life, there’s a hard truth you must accept: you have to move forward even when you don’t feel like it.

The Problem with Feelings

Our feelings are a vital part of the human experience. They provide us with empathy, joy, and a sense of connection. However, when it comes to progress and personal growth, they can be a formidable obstacle.

Feelings are often reactive and short-sighted. They prioritize immediate comfort and ease over long-term fulfillment and growth. They whisper things like:

  • “I’m too tired today.”
  • “I don’t feel motivated.”
  • “What if I fail?”
  • “This is too uncomfortable.”

If we allow these feelings to dictate our actions, we become a slave to our moods. We only take action when we feel inspired, and we retreat when we feel uncertain. This leads to a cycle of inconsistent effort and, ultimately, a lack of meaningful progress.

The Power of Ignoring

There is a time and place for your feelings, and then there are moments in your life where you have to ignore them. This isn’t about becoming a robot or suppressing your emotions; it’s about making a conscious choice to prioritize your goals over your fleeting sentiments.

Ignoring your feelings in this context means:

  • Doing the work when you lack motivation. Motivation is a byproduct of action, not a prerequisite.
  • Pushing through discomfort. Growth happens at the edge of your comfort zone, not within it.
  • Acting despite fear. Fear is often a signal that you’re on the verge of doing something important.

This is where discipline comes in. Discipline is the bridge between your goals and your feelings. It’s the ability to do what needs to be done, even when every part of you resists.

So the next time you feel that resistance, that urge to quit or put it off, acknowledge the feeling, but don’t give it the steering wheel. Instead, choose to take one small, disciplined step forward. Because it’s in those moments of pushing past your feelings that real, lasting change is made.

What’s one thing you know you need to do today, even if you don’t feel like it?
